it is the place where all the data of webpages are uploaded..
that is all the files which are needed to run the webpage are stored there.. by running the index page the website loads

funny that those questions are on a webmaster forum. This is not for nonwebmasters I think ?:P

The site's slogan , playground for webmaster is suggesting that this forum is for webmasters and those who are interested in webhosting stuffs but know nuts about web publishing and the likes.

Suppose, you made a website as your own after attaining the knowledge of HTML..etc.But how this can be shown or exhibited to the public on the internet. There should be some arrangement for that. That facility is called Web Hosting.
There are a lot of Web Hosting companies on the internet. Some companies doing this service for money. Some others doing this as a FREE service. People those who are newbies can sign-up or rgister for this FREE srvice. Then after they are becoming 'Masters'. can change over to paid service.

A web host is a company that has computers that are hooked up to the internet 24/7.
Web hosting is a service provided by big companies to host the web site, the hosted site is accessible one the internet. In fact they provide online systems for storing information, images, video, or any content to the users.

I try to explain it as "3 three relationships you have with your website"

1. Your ISP - This is your internet service provider (such as AOL , SBCglobal, comcast, etc.. whoever gets you to the web) - They get you to the internet

2. Your registrar - This is like the copyright office for domain names. This is where you register a domain name for X amount of years and point it to its physical location

3. Your host - This is like your office location if you have a company. All of your mail goes here, office materials, employee's, files, etc. - This is your virtual location on the web

A host is "your rented piece of real estate on the web". In short.

Shared hosting - This is like living in an apartment complex having to deal with shared resources (washer/dryers) noisy neighbors

Dedicated hosting - Having a mansion with massive space, yet needing a team to maintain that mansion.
