Something like a forum is best on a VPS, little sites are ok on shared.

You should only go with VPS if your website outgrows what basic hosting offers.
Please note that VPS is also shared hosting. Your VPS account will be hosted in a server that also hosts other VPS accounts.

If you go with a VPS ask the company how many accounts they have on one server. If they have just as many as a shared provider, you won't be getting that much in the way of resources.

If you have more than 10 domains (with decent traffics) then I suggest to use VPS.

It depends on your purpose. If you just want to run a small business ,then ,a shared is enough. But if you want to develop your own business you 'd better use the VPS .

It really depends on what you want to do. If you want root access for whatever reason, go vps. If all you want to do is run a simple medium sized website, go with shared. If you want to run something like WPMU, you would want to go VPS.
