Of course Linux running Apache. There is no question about this.

Linux is the best one I think, but some of my clients require development in .Net so I have to go for windows sometimes.

In my experince, bsd in years ahead of linux, especially on highly loaded servers.
In the past, I had situations where linux server where on their knees, while bsd could still manage to give me a login shell.

I know that since, linux kernel have had a major rewrite, and it seems to have brought it near bsd, but still bsd seems to have the winning hand.

So, for a workstation or a "casual" server, I'd say that linux is the path to go, but on a highly critical server, which will be massively accessed, I'd recommand BSD over linux.

linux with no gui is what a server should have, but if you dont know all the shell commands, then you could install a gui but it will use more resources.

It all depends on what you are using the server for. I like Linux, but it doesn't mean that it's the best fit for all circumstances.

Also, Apache is not always the best HTTP server for your needs. It's large and powerful, verging on total overkill for most people's needs. Many popular sites do very well with lighttpd.

Linux i'd have to say for sure! Linux is secure and stable I mean everything that a server needs, and most of the server stuff is made for Linux anyway.

These days, Linux is the self-proclaimed master of servers as is Microsoft for desktops.
