He wants to know if it is possible to run a website off his home computer, using a static IP.
He also seeks information on hackers and malware that could potentially use his newly opened system.

Also, chrishirst, your post made just about as much sense as his did.

Yep I understood what the OP was looking for. So would you like to explain ALL of that in the context of forum posting?

I run two development web servers from my home/office connection and manage three others located in two different datacentres and I know it wouldn't do anyone justice in trying to cover ALL the issues you need to know about to ensure the hosted sites are relatively secure and problem free in a few forum posts.

Specific questions. Yes. The whole spectrum? Not a chance! If I sat here for several days and wrote thread after thread it would not be covered fully enough.

Maybe it's something I should consider for one of my occasional "articles"

You could dedicate a whole site on it, its that big.

simi, you could browse around places like h4cky0u.org and h4ck-y0u.org, g00ns.net, places like that.
If you read over their articles, and over their showcases, you can usually gain tips on how to up the security.

But wait for Chrishirst to write his article

Yeah, its very possible, its just like installing software on a server, but on your own computer along with all your other stuff. I used to have one to test PHP scripts for a site. Protection is basically your anti virus. Remember, anything going to your website is coming to your computer. There's definitely more precautions to take, because you open more gates for them with a server.
