I have seen a lot of people making web directories but never found the reason about why they are creating it. What they get after inserting those thousands of web links in their directories?

Well i wonder that you noticed the weblinks in their database but you didn't noticed the dollars in their pockets they get due to these links.
Actually people think directory as the easiest way to earn money, but when they actually dive into the business they come across the difficulties and long wait.
Some time they meet with success, and sometime it's just a loss

Yes you are absolutely correct. It is really hard to grasp cash from directory if you dont preform well. You have to give so much time to it and have to spend some cash too.
If directory becomes popular, then there is only cash falling into your pocket.

Web directories should primarily be a resource for sites on the net categorized systematically. Its a bit hard to promote a directory and make it a successful one. The directories PR and level of traffic comes into play in determining how well it would perform and succeed in the industry with vast competition

some people have more than ten directory and most of them place advertisement to their directory. i think not difficult to get money from directory.
