with so many directories coming into existence on a daily basis that now most of the webmasters prefer paid to free. Even people searching for data on these directories are now moving more and more towards paid ones. So is it worth wasting some time in submitting your urls to free ones?

I definitely think its worth submitting to free directories.

Every backlink helps, while some may be stronger than others.

Yes but more and more people are turning to paid ones for their seaches online. They think that free directories are a source of spam and nothing else. Earlier the situation was different but now it has changed completley

I hope you don't expect any traffic from a directory. In the 5 years that I've been a webmaster, I've never seen much traffic from any directory.

Most webmasters submit to directories for SEO purposes.

I think u need to add your site to the free ones to increase the no. of back links but you probably wont get much traffic from them. U will get better traffice from the paid directories.
