Never underestimate the importance of those META tags. They can make all the difference between your users coming to your site and going to your competitor's - just because they couldn't find yours. Search Engines heavily rely upon the Keywords & Description Meta tags to populate their search database. And once again, use discretion in writing these. Including a huge number of keywords for the same page can spell trouble. The description should be a small, meaningful summary of the whole page that makes sense even when seen out-of-context of the webpage itself, say, in a listing of search engine results.

I read somewhere that most search engines no longer pay attention to meta tags. It is too easy for anyone to put anything in their meta tags and search engines have learnt not to trust the meta tags.

Why don't more keywords help? I don't really understand how that is possible because I feel the more keywords will help get your site out there.

the more keywords on just one webpage means a tremendous job for the search engine.

Meta Tags are important because you can define keywords, website description etc in them. If you don't use meta tags, search engine will index your website by just catching any text from your webpage but if you use description meta tag, it will index your website with description.

Search Engines no longer rely on keywords and meta-tags: pple r just viewing source and copying/pasting from each other.

If you want high SE rankings, look to semantic mark-up (using H tags instead of bolding, using P tags instead of 2 BRs, etc), short, plain, simple and sharp. In addition, make sure your pages are keyword rich, you name your pages semantically (koi-fish.html, instead of koifish.html or koi_fish.html).

The above are just a few of the things that actually help place your sites higher in SE rankings.

my2cents is pretty much on target -- don't forget to try and add fresh content as often as you can; this is one of the main items the SE's crawl for.
