Default Sound in websites - yes or no?

Although it's fairly easy to implement few websites make use of background melodies or sound effects, although on the rare occasion I have seen some that use a sound for button mouseovers which is interesting.

What's your opinion about it?

I think that most of computer users have a lot of music on their PC/ near them and that they are listening to their favorite songs while surfing on the net. Adding sounds on the sites will make them feel uncomfortable. I don't think it's a good idea to add sounds to the websites. It's not something that will be accepted by the users easily.

Absolutely NO.
It's not a good idea and totally agree with agilius. Many people listen to their own music while surfing on the net and if some sound plays automatically when visiting a website, it would be very annoying. Besides, if it can't be stopped, you will be losing a visitor.

What about 1-2 second sound effects upon a confirmed order, or page entry? Skype, MSN, and Outlook, among other Vista programs do this anyway, so it would be OK I think.

The first thing I do when configuring an operating system or application is to turn off the sounds. A site that makes any noises I wasn't expecting is guaranteed not to be visited again.

well, i partially agree with it, but actually what happens, that when we browse websites, we tend to open many pages at a time, and if any of the page got the music, it distract your attention towards it, and you check which page got the sound.

When i visit someone's page, the first thing that start's playing is some crazy song. First thing i do is to get out of their page. It is kinda annoying.
If you think having sound will increase the usability or the theme of your website. Sure do it. I personally like the website www[dot]dreamworksstudios[dot]com . It is a perfect mix of music and interface.

I agree. It's a bad idea. I hate to visit a website with sound. I will stay away from visiting such a website in the future.
