Automatic sound and video are the most annoying thing. Sometimes I load a page and minimize it for later. When the music comes on I can't figure out where it's coming from. If it is user initiated, I don't mind it at all.

I understand what all the posts are saying about music being annoying on a website, but there is always that grey area. If you are creating a entertainment site or a site for a musical artist, sound is necessary. You want to hear their latest release when you click on their web site. That's the initial reason (besides selling their albums and song tracks) that artists have web sites.

i would say small sounds are fine, but if you want to dip into full songs you must have a way for the user to shut it off.

Definitely not, sound on a website should be very limited. Just think some people will be browsing your site at work and might not be expecting sound. The last thing those people need is the whole office looking at them when they're trying to browse.

im not referring to huge booming sounds, more like sounds like small clicks when you mouseover flash buttons, etc.

I think that soft mousover sounds and things like that are nice and add to the site although background music playing and ads are a definate page bounce.

I think that having sound in websites will be bad, but only if you are running a music site than it should be ok.

For me, sounds on sites are annoying. Maybe a decent sound a flash banner with a "stop" option is acceptable.
