Default Best resolution

What do you think is the best resolution or most common to use for website design?

I usually use my monitor resolution to design my sites, but sometimes it doesn't display correctly when other users with other resolutions visit the site. They have to use scrollbar for displaying the entire website.

Any idea?

I typically use 750 pixel wide, this is what the company I used to work for demanded (actually I *had* to use 750 pixels as a web standard, no less and no more), but now I use anything above 700 up to 1000.

I just got a 1680x1050 resolution screen so 750 pixel designs look a bit odd on it. However you are right, you have to keep in mind your visitors and their differing resolutions.

You can also use fluid designs (% rather than pixels) but I never do.

800x600 was a common resolution before limiting the designs to such. But I see a lot of sites targeting on 1024x768.

You'll still get scrollbars if you use 800pixel or 1024pixel wide designs. You have to allow ~50 pixels for the browser window borders and the browser scrollbar.

I'd go on 1024x<whatever>. The width matters. Now over 86% of the UV that I get from my Photoshop Blog have a resolution larger or equal to 1024x768. I get around 200-300/day. Soon we could be able to think at 1280 as the main resolution

i guess, it's 1024 x 768 that is widely used around, but i see far more resolutions limits in future, till than work with 1024 x 768 as 800 x 600 is quite old choice.

Some web designers told me the best resolution to design for is 1024 x 768, why?
Because it's the most common among internet surfers.
800 x 600 is quite old to use now, don't you think?

1024x768 screens can roll back to 800x600 layout (a 800x600 layout can be made to look good on a 1024x768 screen), but a 1024x768 layout cannot be made to look good on a 800x600 screen.

So, even though 1024x768 is the most common among internet surfers if you design for 800x600 the most surfers will be able to view your site without scrolling. About 80% of my visitors use 1024x768+ and about 20% use 800x600, but if I used a 1024x768 layout I'd inconvenience 20% of my visitors.

Nonetheless large websites with 3+ navigation systems are almost impossible to build without making them 1000pixels+ wide.

I'm sure I'm not alone in running my browser in a window much smaller than my display resolution. If you must use a fixed-width layout, I would advise keeping it to less than 1000 pixels. Then again, really narrow sites annoy me too...
