Html is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document by denoting certain text as headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of labels (known as tags), surrounded by angle brackets.

If HTML is the markup language for web pages, as josephbiondo said, and its true, than it was used when the first site was made.

According to the World Wide Web Consortium, HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the lingua franca for publishing hypertext on the World Wide Web. It is a non-proprietary format based upon SGML, and can be created and processed by a wide range of tools, from simple plain text editors - you type it in from scratch- to sophisticated WYSIWYG authoring tools. HTML uses tags such as <h1> and </h1> to structure text into headings, paragraphs, lists, hypertext links etc.

HarryGr8 ! Very first publicly available description of HTML was a document called "HTML Tags', prepared by Bernes lee in 1991. That document contained 22 elements and inital description of html. In 2000 html become the standard(ISO 15445:2000). The latest recommendation from w3c was html 4.01, publicly available since 1999
