Here is what I did for my personal gallery (my personal website is still under construction):
I added the link to my profiles in ~10 forums and I got a lot of traffic. For 3 days approx 100 people have visited my gallery, I just can't believe that.
I don't earn money online and I don't think I will start anytime soon (I don't like adds ), but this is just an example how to increase your traffic.

Well, that pretty much sums it up. But you can you a few free SEO's. Then you'll get a variety of sites yours is added to. Directories are better to do manually. And yeah, if the forums have a link dump or an advertising area, Post it there and make it interesting, make a conversation in the thread. It'll bring you many visitors.

Try to focus on the site's organic results, several mentioned methods above would help you achieve good traffic but it's good to prioritize the things that will last long.

Its a great website, I used it for one of my earlier websites and it actually does work.
Though some of the people you get are just visiting, and are there for their traffic, you get reviews and if your lucky, someone might properly review it. This can help with the development of your site.

If your using something like vBulletin, I would install an SEO package for it, and then get a few mates to help you post around and fill up the forums for a couple of months.
Instead of pruning, just move all closed, dead and old threads to a graveyard or junkyard, so that spiders can still crawl through them (more hits on a search engine).

Also, like as stated by many before me, advertise where your allowed, start a link-for-link affiliation with a couple of small sites, submit your link to various websites, and I would recommend installing google advertisements and making it so that only guests, leechers, and spiders can see it (not sure if vBulletin has a good spider control, though).

There are many methods for generating traffic to your Web site; some excellent and some a waste of time and money.

Effective methods include ensuring that your site is found and listed well in natural search results, using Keyword Advertising to generate targeted traffic, obtaining links from related sites or sites whose visitors would be interested in what you offer, putting your Web site address on all printed materials, business cards, and in your email signature, and advertising offline.

Default Link building - One of the options

Probably to submit your site to all sorts of sites on the internet. That way users will go from other sites on yours.
