Default Meta Tags

How many of you still place any importance on Meta tags. Personally I feel that the search engines still look at them when looking at your site but many others seem to suggest the opposite. What is your view on the topic?

Yes, meta tags is still useful 'coz the SE itself like for example google uses it that describe what a site is all-about. The title, descriptions and the keywords.....

IMO, Meta Tags are always useful. Even some say that SE's don't give any weight to meta tags. meta tags can give the visitors short description of the site

Total Rubbish

You all guys think this way, coz u never took the trouble of experimenting websites without METAs.

Meta Description helps ONLY if the page is largely image-based. If you have enough text matter on the page...you may better scrap it off as well.

As for keywords...all the major SEs stopped considering them atleast 4 yrs ago.

Since most pple just view source, copy meta tags and paste them on their sites, SEs stopped placing emphasis on them and are now focused more on, among others:

1) Semantic Markup

2) Keyword density

3) Link popularity

4) Link relevance.

For me meta tags are still important. Besides, it is still not proven that SE's are not using it in selecting a site.

the bottom line is, do you lose something when you add meta tags?

and besides, you don't have any single right to say that other's opinion is rubbish.

All the meta tags are still useful except the meta keywords which has been deprecated due to abuse for the past few years...

meta tags used to be THE way search engines would index a site. They were abused and developers went on to weigh other methods heavier than meta tags, but meta tags still definitely play a roll in search engine ranking, or at the very least, how the site is listed *after* it is ranked.

These days I find the factors that weigh the heaviest into a page ranking are:

how many other sites link to you, and the ranking of those sites
what words or phrases used to actually make the link play a big factor
the title of the document

This is by no means a complete list.

Yeah rubbish as you say I have also experimented without putting meta tags... but it is useful even not in rankings... Don't you know that MSN still uses that?
