Default How Link Popularity really helps sites to be on TOP of SERPs?

hi...

I confused about Google Link Popularity if how this popularity really helps to make website get on the top on SERPs?
coz.. I tried a Google search with a certain keywords and I found out that the number one in result page have only 5 google inlinks and next is a site with 41 Google inlinks....

Why the site have 5 inlinks is in the number one slot not the site that have 41 inlinks?

any explanation for this..

thanks....

Google does not always show all the backlinks in using the "link:" query.

For a more accurate list of backlinks, use yahoo site explorer. Or just go to Yahoo and use their search box using the "link:" query as this will redirect you to the Yahoo Site Explorer. Hope that helps

as MrCat said, google doesn't always show the exact number (although it's counting in the background)..Also take into effect the quality of the links. If I have 1,000 inbound links from FFA or link farm site's it's not going to count for anything and someone who has 10 or 20 high quality links is going to rank above me.

one question no one asked you is this - where did you get your info about the amount of incoming links for the sites in question. There are some good and bad sites out there for gathering that type of info.

When you search the links manually, Google will show you a partila list of you links. So if you want to see a much wider list of your backlinks, sign-up for an account at Google Webmaster tools

I agree with aciam, because Google does not show all back links in backward links. then if you want to check your all backward links then you have to try out Google webmaster tool

yes Google does not show all back links. Once you want to check your back link then you can use Yahoo. Yahoo is very fast for checking inbound links. If not then use Google webmaster tool
