off course both are good for generating traffic for website. i have a doubt that forum signature link is considered as back link for a website but does social network link is considered as Backlink for website by search engine bots.
I think forum signature makes sense more than social bookmark or social network.
However, some social network has more power to major search engines such as digg bookmark will be usually crawled, cached and indexed within 30 minutes by Google.
It is wonderful web traffic you will get from the powerful social bookmark, but don't spam it. Please do it naturally in order to keep it as a reliable social network in the eye of major search engines.

you said so.. but make sure.. the anchor text must be related to the site inserted.. and it also a way letting SE what the site was all about.
Yeah, true, to each his own and each will have its own pros and cons, but my sense is that forums have an edge on feeling more personal and in a real community.

I like putting it in forum sigs better, because if you're really active in a forum and contribute a lot then your link will show up more. And if you are active in lots of forums, especially those with similar topics, it helps even more. With social networking sites, it's pretty limited and IMO hard to spread your link.
