I have recently found out that web sites and domains are listed better on search engines if they have existed for quite a long time. However, what if your site is quite new? How do you go about getting good search engine rankings?

I think that age of your domain helps you in SERPs.
Other than that, I am not sure. I have seen some of my sites rank on top on some keywords and they were less than a month old.
So, I guess it depends on several factors. You should really be optimizing for SEO, get a good link building campaign and you'll rank high in no time.

You are mixing up cause and effect. It's NOT because it's x years old. It's BECAUSE a website that has existed for some time will have collected NATURAL links

You have to do more things better than the pages that are above yours.

i don't think that sandbox still exists (esp. in Google).. As for the new sites, getting quality IBLs will help it get indexed faster.

Building quality IBLs will help a newly created site to be get listed on SERPs and get a good rank afterwards though it will definitely needed more effort and much time if it's under a very competitive niche
