RSS newbie here

what exactly is RSS? from the little bit i gathered it is like some sort of feed that your website gets? so could i use RSS to make an automated "joke of the day or something on there? im new to a lot of this web stuff and still trying to figure these things out, any instruction on RSS would be helpful.
