Vbulletin is my favorite and it is worth the money over any other forum software due to the ease of use and vast features that other forums need mods to incorporate.

I like vBulletin the most out of all forum software. I like all the mods available, and how easy everything is. It was well worth $160 on an owned license. If I had to use a free one, I would probabally pick either SMF or MyBB.

I use MyBB for my forum at CompuTalk Forum - Free Forum Hosting

It has loads of features similar to vBulletin and phpBB, it is light on the server and highly customizable.
