I've been looking to set up an e-commerce site, and the name of this software application is mentioned very often. Is osCommerce the best free e-commerce software out there? If not, what's the best one?

Also ... if I am willing to pay money to get a copy of e-commerce software application, what scripts are there?

The best is the one that meets your needs. It usually best to use a WAMP or XAMPP or MAMP localhost setup on your desktop computer and compare them side-by-side - setting up your store and theming the site.

I have been using for some time and it is by far the best i have used compared to other products.

I use cs-cart for a paid shopping cart and it does the job nicely. Compares to x-cart for features.

I think os-commerce is pretty good myself, in the end it is how comfortable you feel using whatever software you choose, you can always move if you don't like it.
