This thread is about what NOT to do when running a website. Please state one or two key things that make the top of your DO NOT DO list. That way someone reading the thread can hopefully pick up a good tip or two.

From me, in regard to a forum site (especially when just starting out):

Do NOT let people go without a response. They took the time to do what you wanted. They joined and posted. Don't make them sorry they did. Make sure they get some sort of response.

For forums, I have two things NOT to do. First, don't create too many forums when you first start off. This will make it look huge and empty.

Second, don't install too many modifications. You don't need an arcade when you start out, because then the few members you have will play in the arcade and not post.

This is a good topic, would you mind putting replies in list form?
It may earn it a sticky.

Anyways...

• Dont install needless modifications, you need what you need, not what you want.
• Your VIPs arent the most important people on your site, its the posters and regular members who give your site a great public persona.
  Dedicate some time to improving end-user experience for all of your regular members, and offer services for your VIPs that regular members dont get, like a colored username, custom usertitle, greater signature / avatar limits, etc.
• Personally reply to every introduction on your site.
• Dont over-post, and especially, do not post things that could potentially kill off the thread.
• Dont produce an ugly skin, if it looks good, people will come back.
• Keep on-topic and dont abuse your staff privilages (ie. delete users posts to annoy them).

Just a quick list I put up.

I'm not so sure I agree on the one Always give a choice, what might be ugly to some may be nice for others. If some members don't like it, put another skin up but leave that one if some members like it. This way your known users can be happy and it doesn't have to affect the others.

Things NOT to do...

1. Don't ban for one incident, unless of course it endangers the whole site, simply suspend for a while to see if the member will come back nicely. If they continue, then you shoudl ban them.
2. Don't be short tempered with your members
3. Don't delete posts, move them to a trash area in case they are needed later, you never know...

Lime green text, dark yellow background, furo pink links, etc.
Ugly.

I'm talking about styles that break every unspoken designing law out there.
But what you said is right, if your updating you site, keep your previous style available, you never know.

avoid too much applications or .exe apps coz it slows down page loading
