Mine hasn't taken off after almost 4 months, I'm about to give up on it, its hard to get a forum active at first cause nobody knows what to talk about lol.

Don't give up. Maybe you should initiate the topic to encourage others to post. Try promoting your forum with say bumper stickers and such among your friends and other people. One thing I have learned about running a site is that patience is vital to succeed.

There are so many forums! Getting a good start is really a hard job. Getting people to join is already a pain.

Default Helps if you already have a list

If you already have other busy websites in that niche and a huge list your forum can take off rather quickly. If not it is a longer term process. Count on a year.

Depending on your type of promotion, I would say at least one year.

My first forum I promoted through the usual ways, such as directory submission, link building, posting articles - and that site nevre did take off.

So I changed direction and started video blogging on youtube. A couple of months later, traffic really took off.

I have seen forums that are 2, 3, 4 and even 5 years old that never took off. But then again, it looks like the owner did not do any serious promotion either.
