i'm using dreamweaver 8. not too slow in my old pc (p3). but, if you want to a good php editor, try tswebeditor. have a much features include IntelliSense (like Ms Visual studios).

in theory, yes. but, using php editor like dreamweaver or tswebeditor will help you much.

If I have to use something like Notepad, I will use Notepad++, it is created for coders and designers, I like it very much. If you can afford Dreamweaver, buy it. It is a really good, easy to use program. It works not only with PHP and HTML/CSS but also JavaScript, XML.
I use DW CS3, one year ago I used DW 8 but I switched to CS3 because DW 8 had some bugs what were fixed in the last version.

Depends what the situation is.

I have the CS3 professional pack, so I'll use dreamweaver on a lazy day, or if the php is apart of what I'm making.
If the php is just a small text file (say for integration with something), I'll just use notepad.

If I am editing a file on my server, I load up File Manager v3, and use its text editor, but if theres a syntax error I'll use the code editor.

As my teacher always says, 'the best piece of software is the one that works for you'.

I use TextMate for everything, it's fantastic, shame it's Mac-only though.

how much does DW CS3 cost?

I use DevPHP. got it at $0.00. sweet!

Yeah, devPHP is a great editor, strongly recommend it.

My favorite editor is NuSphere PhpED ... its got everything you need without having to setup a server with php. Seems to be the best i've tried so far and i've been through alot of them.
