Opt for longer tail keywords that has less competition. This will make it easier for you to rank number one.
Building more targeted backlinks using your keywords as anchor texts is also an important factor.

If you have search box on your site you can create tag cloud. Google will crawl your search results, index pages with search results, discover pages which was unreachable before.
Tag cloud will improve importance of your pages (especially pages which are to far from homepage).Though this strategy works only for websites with 1000+ pages.

For reaching the top positions in Google, you need having an SEO friendly designed website, with good content as well as many good links pointing at your site. The other important matter to be mentioned is the matter of time as webmasters need to be patient.

Time, quality unique content, and a lot of quality backlinks gained gradually over time. In other words, don't get all your links at once.

Right on. Link velocity is important. For Google to love your site, your site should gradually be gaining more links at a faster rate.

Another important factor is to build more links that are not "nofollow" - this will give you more benefits in terms of SEO. Directories, blogs, forums, SB sites are just some venues to start with.

Not true, studies have shown that nofollow links still pass relevance (not PageRank) and people have ranked before just off of nofollow links. Some people even speculate that Google will think it's natural to have both dofollow and nofollow links, so it's good to have lots of both.

It is common knowledge that dofollow links has more relevance as it is considered as a positive vote for a site in the eyes of the SE's.
I am not trying to discount on also getting nofollow links. It is just better to build dofollow links than nofollow in SEO - this is based on my experience btw.

Patience is key, don't think it is going to happen overnight. Don't get in a hurry and start doing risky linking schemes. Slow and steady is the key with google.
