I find that joining relevant forums and adding a link to your sig can be a good way. Also, if your forum members are members of other relevant forums, ask them if they can add a link to their sig or make a post about it.

I think it would be a good way to promote your own forum in others forum. But usually forum would grow quickly if the owner or moderator are already a well known figure.

Hi, the previous comments were right on the money and I want to add that there are plenty of opportunities to express what is different or attractive about your site in the forum world. Through conversation within a site community is the most natural, and probably one of the most effective ways - but it takes an investment in time. Like everything else, you get what you give. But MANY sites have a forum specifically designed to showcase or advertise your business, site, contest, or event. You just need to be mindful of the rules.

These tips and comments are great, and definitely need to be known. The best thing you can do when advertising in a forum is to make quality posts, and then after you make a good amount of posts advertise your site in the ad area of the forum. If you put the link in your signature and in the website field, that helps too.

It's better, after all, to make many posts in a few forums with your link in the sig than to make 5-10 posts in many forums. You're not seen as a spammer and more of a quality member for the forum that wants to advertise their own site.
