I started Mars Guitars on eBay, then got my own e-commerce store... but still use eBay.

Ebay is great for selling - the best marketing there is - but costs are high, especially when you're selling low-value goods.

I know plenty of people who have gotten into ecommerce, and they still use eBay for the exact same reasons.
They list around 10 items out of 50 on eBay, and have links to their site.

Personally, I am going to use my interest in web design and coding to do a custom design business hooked up to my portfolio.
I'm undecided on a forum system, though... I'm thinking vB + CMPS + integrated blog... dont know though.

I agree. I used to sell laptops on Ebay, mostly Dell laptops. I used to buy the laptops cheap by getting the deals from deals websites like this deals website, stacking coupons, etc...
However, with the Ebay fees increasing, I couldn't make any decent profit. It was too much for very little money, so I gave up.
